A few months ago I said, “Why don’t we have aa small celebration, like a blessing from the families, to show our commitment to each other?” Getting a positive response, I began to Google –– and learned that “commitment ceremony” was a thing!
Apparently the concept started with couples who could not legally marry, such as for same-sex or religious prohibitions, and these have since been used as an alternative to traditional marriage.
“A commitment ceremony is when two people commit their lives to one another. It is similar to a wedding and can include wedding traditions, but it does not result in a legally bonding marriage.” (brides.com)
If you read my last blog (“Senior Relationships”), you may understand my reasons for choosing this type of celebration. We may miss out on some benefits of being legally married (such as tax breaks or health insurance), but it was a choice we were both comfortable with.
A commitment ceremony can be anything that the couple chooses. Ours was held outside at a family home with his oldest brother and my daughter officiating. We included elements of our faith tradition (a New Testament reading and the Lord’s Prayer said in unison), as well as poetry by Indian elder Oriah Mountain Dreamer. Family and close friends joined us. It was brief, HOT, and perfect!
